Managing Irrigation for Turfgrass Health - On Demand

Author
Doug Soldat, Ph.D.
Start Date
3/15/2017
Duration
90 Minutes

Golf courses everywhere are under increasing pressure (political, economic, etc.) to reduce water use. Fortunately, our agronomic goals related to irrigation management (firm and fast) overlap with our environmental goals of using less water. But the devil is in the details and in this 90-minute webinar Doug Soldat, Ph.D., discusses those details. Irrigation is still largely an art, and maximizing irrigation uniformity is a perennial challenge. Moisture monitoring technology has improved dramatically in the past decade along with other tools and information regarding water conservation. This webinar focuses on irrigation management using the latest research information and tools of the trade.

About the Instructor

Doug Soldat PhDDoug Soldat, Ph.D., is an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Department of Soil Science. He focuses on turfgrass, urban soils, nutrient management, water resources, soil testing and landscape irrigation. Soldat earned his bachelors and masters degrees in soil science from the University of Wisconsin and his Ph.D. in horticulture from Cornell University. Current research projects include: evaluation of use of biosolids for improving the economics and environmental sustainability of sod production, analysis of the uptake and utilization of fall-applied nitrogen fertilizer to turfgrass in cool temperatures, evaluation of a water harvesting/drip irrigation system for turfgrass irrigation, use of 18O-labeled phosphate as an environmental tracer to determine soil microbial metabolic rates and use of plant growth regulators to decrease the fertilizer requirement of golf course putting greens. Soldat taught several seminars at GIS 2017 in Orlando.
