Research which has produced significant and novel data on the use of phosphite as a management tool in cool-season turfgrasses is presented by John Dempsey, Ph.D. During this 90-minute webinar, he covers what is phosphite, its development for turfgrass usage, its ability to suppress common turfgrass diseases such as Microdochium patch and Anthracnose, and its effect on turfgrass growth and development. Dempsey shows that the use of phosphite in a turf management program, will not only suppress disease incidence but increase the efficacy of turfgrass fungicides and lead to an enhancement of turfgrass quality.
After attending this program, attendees will be able to:
• Describe what phosphite is, how it’s taken up and translocated within turfgrass and understand the process by which it can reduce disease incidence.
• Understand how phosphite, despite not supplying a nutritional form of phosphorus can improve turfgrass quality and lead to growth enhancement.
• Be able to judge if the incorporation of phosphite into their maintenance program would be cost beneficial for the facility they manage.

Always having a keen interest in sports turf education, he began with basic greenkeeping at the Botanic Gardens in Dublin, to a 1st Class Honours Degree in Turfgrass Science at Myerscough College in the U.K., to earning a Ph.D. in Turfgrass Pathology in the Centre for Research in Biosciences at the University of the West of England, Bristol. Dempsey has conducted independent research on turfgrass disease management, covering extensively the subject Microdochium nivale infection of turfgrasses, turfgrass responses to infection and the effect of phosphite treatments on disease suppression, turfgrass growth and quality. He has presented at numerous conferences and seminars in Ireland, Scotland, France, Germany, Norway, USA, Canada and at BTME in Harrogate.
